The essence of my work remains a reflection of conflict and metamorphosis between culture and nature, delving deep into the corruption of American ideals and historical myths. This new narrative manifests an ethos that mirrors the transformative effects of impermanence, capturing moments and places of intense, energetic alteration.
There are specific phrases and elements from the old description that I wish to preserve and highlight. "Society of Motion Pictures" and the evocative passage "space, in the end, will not lie flat and form a passive surface for our narcissism, our self-projections, the realizations of our grand and aggrandizing narrative…… International Necronautical Society Propaganda//2009" are integral to the continuity and resonate deeply with my artistic vision.
My compositions, inspired by the high flux of consumer media inundating the American consciousness, juxtapose past and current socio-critical strata. By fabricating images, I engage in a historical conversation that reflects the systematic crises of both the past and present. Utilizing materials such as dibon, glass, fujiflex, lead, gun powder, and video, each piece represents a form of treason against the idyllic philosophy ingrained in traditional conceptions of art.
As an anthropologist, my focus is on the present human condition—a condition marked by the absurd and the banal, the mundane dressed as the insane, and vice versa. Heavily influenced by the Orwellian construct of a post 9-11 society, my work hones in on a world bleeding technology, materialism, and pervasive anxiety. Nevertheless, my art is not topical but narrative in nature: a visual, social, and historical conversation about the intensely personal internal struggle of the self and its dynamic power within a manipulable world.
The humor and poetic style I enjoy incorporate irony and subtle wit, intertwined with layered metaphors and socratic questions. The intended mood is one that challenges the viewer—provoking reflections on their own narratives and the broader societal narratives. It is a mood of introspection mixed with the stark realization of the absurdity and the profundity of the human condition.
In creating this project, I strived to blend the elegant complexity of theatrical history with the raw, impassioned energy of modern socio-political critique, crafting a colorful multidimensional narrative that invites contemplation, conversation, and ultimately, a deeper understanding of the perennial conflict between self and society.
