In our latest series, we continue exploring themes of fragility, ephemerality, and humor, this time emphasizing the tactile qualities of paint itself. Each piece serves as a meditation on time, light, and the delicate interplay between nature and human experience. Though the handles integrated into our travel frames offer practicality, they are secondary to the painted surfaces, which remain the true essence of the work.
Our paintings are rich in texture, employing layers of high-temperature solid paint sourced from Japan, allowing the surface to bear a physical weight that invites the viewer to engage beyond mere observation. We draw heavily from the tradition of Italian impasto, using the buildup of paint to create a tactile, almost sculptural quality. The works act as meditations on time―paint applied slowly, deliberately, and often over years. Each layer tells a story, accumulating meaning through a process rather than instant creation.
Light plays a crucial role in these compositions, not just as subject matter but as a transformative force. Incorporating retro-reflective glass dust from Doost, the surfaces react to different light sources, shifting in appearance as one moves around them. This reflective quality mirrors the ocean’s constant flux―an ever-present motif in our work. The ocean serves as both metaphor and material inspiration, symbolizing the vastness of existence and the fragility of fleeting moments within it.
We continue to explore life's fragile nature, using color and form to evoke the tension between permanence and transience. Tropical scenes and water elements are frequent but often rendered with a playful, almost absurdist touch, turning familiar landscapes into places of quiet irony. These are not idealized paradises but rather spaces where time lingers and humor and serenity coexist in fragile harmony.
Since abandoning social media, my swipes have transitioned into my painting practice, reflecting a shift where swipes become an active process of creative procrastination. This subtle change emphasizes the intentionality behind each brushstroke―an embodied act of patience contrasting with the instant gratification of digital interactions. Our paintings capture this slow, deliberate nature, transforming habitual gestures into artistic reflection.
Ultimately, our work reflects the slow, intentional nature of creativity itself. The painstaking layering of paint becomes a metaphor for the broader act of living―each stroke, each pause, a step toward capturing the fleeting beauty of the world. Our practice is not about rushing to a finished product but about allowing each piece to evolve, breathe, and exist on its own terms. This patient approach stands as a counterpoint to the fast pace of modern life, encouraging a moment of reflection.
As we continue exploring these themes across various media, we remain focused on pushing the boundaries of painting while staying true to the principles that have guided our journey: fragility, humor, and the quiet power of time.
